In South Dakota, where more than 80% of land is privately owned, access can be a limiting factor for hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts if enough acres are not enrolled in a public access program. That’s why the Public Access to Habitat (PATH) program is turning heads, winning over landowners, and opening gates to some of the state’s best pheasant and grouse habitat.
Launched in September 2023, PATH is the product of a partnership between Pheasants Forever and the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department.

I first met Jeff Broberg at a Minnesota DNR watershed confab and barbecue in southeastern Minnesota in the early 2000s. He was there representing the Minnesota Trout Association. He made a lasting impression.
Two Minnesota DNR fisheries biologists had just finished an electroshocking presentation on a local trout stream, a large stretch of which had been restored after years of neglect. A group of stakeholders – Trout Unlimited members, local politicians, and farmers inside and outside of the watershed – stood streamside and ate hot dogs while various speakers praised the restoration work and the collaboration it took to complete the project.
I’ve mentioned before that I am the father of three grown children. I use “grown” to mask the fact that my kids are truly old enough to have kids of their own and probably should not be referred to as children at all. They are fully grown adults.
That said, I am years past the time when my wife and I were raising the kids. Times have definitely changed and the rules for child rearing are different from back in my day.

Learning that I live on only one-acre in a subdivision a mere 50 miles from midtown Manhattan, you might think my property is barren of wildlife.
Of course, I always knew that wasn’t the case. I’ve seen and even successfully hunted deer and turkeys in my backwoods. We are overrun with gray squirrels, and perhaps two or three times a year I will hear coyotes screeching at night. I’ve lived in our house for 50 years, but it wasn’t until I put up a trail camera that I discovered the variety of wildlife that travel to and through our backwoods.

Things are starting to get real, and with less than a month to go until another deer season begins in many states, it’s time to really start dialing in setups, gear, and target practice.
Easy though it would be for me to lie to you and claim that I’ve been shooting my bow religiously for months and can hit a dime at 50 yards, that’s simply not the case. This year has kept me non-stop busy, working on habitat projects, resulting in every spare daylight minute invested into land management and, unfortunately, target shooting has landed squarely on the backburner.
