Michigan waterfowl numbers appear down from 2024

Locally produced duck and goose numbers were both down this spring in Michigan and those effects are likely to be felt by waterfowl hunters this fall. Biologists, however, believe the early teal season and goose hunting should both be pretty solid.
Waterfowl hunting begins Sept. 1 with the start of goose and early teal seasons.

Deer hunter out scouting discovers rare subtropical wood stork in central Wisconsin

A rare and apparently very confused subtropical wood stork somehow found its way to the wilds of Wisconsin.
A hunter scouting for deer first sighted the bird on Aug. 10 in a remote section of the Mud Lake Wildlife Area in Columbia County, about 35 miles northeast of Madison, the state’s capital, said Horicon Marsh Bird Club President Jeff Bahls. The hunter snapped some photos of the stork and sent them to Bahls.

Mike Schoonveld: You caught a fish, so smile!

It only takes about two clicks on my phone, tablet or computer these days to find a photograph of someone holding a fish, fresh from the lake, being posed for the camera or cell phone.
It may be a special fish, the first fish of the day, the first fish of that species the angler ever caught. Sometimes it’s a photo of someone’s personal best. It doesn’t take much for a fish or fisherman to be deemed photo-worthy. That’s great! What isn’t usually so great is the photo.

Tom Pink: Whitefish in Lake Superior holding steady (for now) while populations in other Great Lakes dwindle

There has been a lot written about the decline of whitefish in northern lakes Huron and Michigan over the past several weeks, including a story written by editor Bill Parker in the July 18 issue of Michigan Outdoor News.
Biologists have found the proliferation of quagga mussels, coupled with effects of climate change, have brought the whitefish population to historic lows in these two Great Lakes. They noted whitefish used to be more plentiful in the lower lakes, too.

From backwaters to oxbows, here’s how to hunt waterfowl on the mighty Mississippi

John Devney doesn’t remember a lot about his early-teen years, but he does vividly recall one moment with stunning clarity: the early October morning he shot his first duck.
He was 12 years old. It was opening day. He was hunting an island on the Mississippi River near Little Falls, a town in central Minnesota, with his father and grandfather.
“I wasn’t new to the duck blind at that point, because I had been tagging long on duck hunts for seven or eight years by then,” said Devney, chief policy officer for Delta Waterfowl in Bismarck, N.D.
