Conservationist’s legacy remembered at Minnesota wildlife management area dedication

Supporters gathered in May to dedicate a new state wildlife management area  in Minnesota and to pay tribute to a conservation champion who lived by the motto, as she would put it, “just payin’ it forward.”
The Stacy Dvorak Memorial Tract is a 52-acre addition to the Bradshaw Lake Wildlife Management Area.

Steve Pollick: Working on, then handing down an old firearm that has long been in the family

Every hunting and shooting family should have a legacy rifle, an arm treasured not for its market value but for its time in service across generations.
My family has such a rifle. It is a J.C. Higgins Model 103.16, a magazine-fed bolt-action .22 rifle, and it has been shot and carried and cared for by four generations of Pollicks. For us, it is priceless.

Carp deterrent design for Minnesota waters of the Mississippi will be decided by June 2026

A little over a year after a $12 million carp deterrent project at the Mississippi River’s Lock and Dam 5 near Winona was approved by the Minnesota Legislature, Phase 1 is about to be in the rearview with more work to come.
“There’s a lot of anticipation around this project and, certainly, we’re excited to see the next steps,” said Kelly Pennington, Invasive Species Unit supervisor for the DNR.

State Roundup: Lake Wisconsin, Wisconsin River part of outstanding sturgeon waters for upcoming hook-and-line season

Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River up to the Wisconsin Dells dam was estimated in 2008 to have a population of 1,600 adult fish that are 50 inches or longer. According to a DNR report, that number hasn’t changed much since the 1980s despite some high levels of harvest prior to the size limit increasing to 60 inches in 2007.

Extreme cases of ‘swimmer’s itch’ in parts of Minnesota put mergansers in crosshairs

DNR officials were faced with a decision: whether or not to allow the take – killing – of common mergansers on two Minnesota waters where lakeshore residents say swimmer’s itch has become more than an inconvenience. They say it’s moved into territory that could more accurately be defined as a health risk.
Late last week, the DNR rejected a proposed permit that would’ve allowed for the capture and euthanizing of up to 100 mergansers from Pelican Lake in west-central Minnesota’s Otter Tail County, as well as up to 30 from Bay Lake in Crow Wing County.

Dan Ladd: What exactly defines ‘putting the time in’ for a hunter?

One of the ongoing themes surrounding the crossbow debate many of us have been following these past two decades (and then some) is in relation to the amount of time it takes one to become proficient with a vertical bow, compared to shooting a crossbow out of the box. This, some believe, warrants exclusivity to hunters who use vertical bows rather than a crossbow.
Acquiring a certain level of proficiency with a vertical bow obviously requires one to “put the time in,” there’s no disputing that. The question I raise is why practicing with a bow is the only hunting skill that should, or could, warrant exclusivity within a season?

St. Patrick’s Day dye job doesn’t appear to bother Chicago River fish

Each March, the Chicago River gets its annual St. Patrick’s Day dye job. This tradition attracts tens of thousands of revelers to the riverfront, but in recent years it’s also attracted criticism from environmentalists who wonder about the harm the dye causes the river’s ecosystem, including the fish that live in it.
But at least one scientist says the fish don’t really seem to object to whatever is added to the river.
