Camera shy otter snapped for first time after 15 years of monitoring in Illinois

With wildlife cameras set up at more than 100 sites within a 30-mile radius of Chicago, Lincoln Park Zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute has captured hundreds of thousands of images of critters since it launched a monitoring project in 2010 – deer, squirrels, skunks, rabbits, coyotes, minks, the occasional weasel and even, memorably, a hawk in mid-swoop.
A surprise just showed up: a North American river otter.

Osprey banded in Cook County, Ill., found in Colombia after 2,500-mile flight

For more than 30 years, Cook County wildlife biologist Chris Anchor and his colleagues have been attaching metal ID bands to the legs of various birds – thousands in all – and every great once in a while, one of those birds, or maybe just its tag, is found.
This summer, Anchor received a report from the federal bird banding lab in Maryland that one of Cook County’s ospreys had landed in Colombia.
After 30 years of banding, this is the most exceptional return that we’ve ever had,” Anchor said.
