Wisconsin DNR investigating black bear attack in Barron County

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced on Sunday that the agency is investigating after a 69-year-old woman was attacked by a black bear near the town of Comstock in Barron County.
The victim reported the attack around 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12. She was able to call 911 and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The victim’s condition is currently unknown, but the DNR said in the release that she sustained severe injuries.

Christine Thomas: Major steps up, captures barn hunt title

This is issue No. 14 of the 2025 edition of Wisconsin Outdoor News. In issue No. 3, I introduced my readers to the dog sport of Barn Hunt when Major, and many Airedale friends, did barn hunt training at the Oh Rats Dog Training Center in Sheboygan.
Barn Hunt is a sport where the objective is to find rats that are hidden safely in PVC pipe tubes, and buried in straw. The dog must find the rat or rats, navigate tunnels in the straw, and climb on bales. The time is limited.

Take a new approach to catch big warm-water smallies

The days of hungry, shallow-swimming fish are over.
The spawn is long gone, the water temperatures are high, and the recreational boaters are out in swarms. If fishing smallmouths is your jam, this can be a tough time of year to enjoy yourself on the water. But, not all hope is lost. The fish are still out there, and they will still eat.

New York Reader Stories: A tribute in the form of hand-loads

For almost 30 years my father-in-law was part of our hunting camp. Getting to the outdoors and sharing those times were precious and very special. It really hits home when he’s no longer with us.
It will be four years ago this coming summer that we said “goodbye.” He was an immigrant from Italy, coming over on “the boat” landing on Ellis Island at about 5 years old, as we were told, and evidently having firearms and shooting in his blood.

Whitefish woes continue in the lower Great Lakes

The plight of lake whitefish in the Great Lakes continues.
Whitefish are found in all of the Great Lakes but tend to be somewhat localized and seasonal. They’ve been an important subsistence species for Native Americans and a large component of the commercial catch in the Great Lakes region.

Steve Sarley: Turns out using a guide for fishing is not so bad after all

I like to think of myself as open-minded and reasonable. Now if you were to ask my lovely wife to describe me, you’d probably get an answer that includes the words “stubborn,” and “hard-headed.” Approaching our golden anniversary and the woman barely knows me! Go figure! In actuality, I may be a little resistant to change.
Fishing is one area that I seem to have many firm opinions on. But one subject that I’ve done a complete 180-degree turn on is that of using fishing guides.

Quagga mussels blamed for whitefish declines in Great Lakes

The bi-national Great Lakes Fisheries Commission (GLFC) was formed in 1955 to eradicate the invasive sea lamprey and to provide guidance for Great Lakes fisheries management.
According to the GLFC, lake whitefish populations have declined as much as 80% in the Great Lakes since the late 1990s. This family of fishes have historically been decimated by overfishing, pollution, dead zones, habitat degradation, and invasive fish, including sea lamprey (parasitism), rainbow smelt (predation and competition) and alewife (competition).
