If you’re looking for largemouth bass in many of our northern, natural lakes, the approach is simple: Find the weeds, and odds are you’ll find bass. That being said, not all weeds are created equal. Different types attract bass in different ways.
Weeds grow in a variety of areas, including shallow, deep, and anywhere in between. One thing I’ve noticed when it comes to weeds in Midwestern lakes is that they’re changing.

A group of friends and myself were headed out for a couple days of walleye fishing and even more friends were on a second boat. All of us were expecting the captains/guides to put us on fish during the trip and to clean, or arrange for the fish to be cleaned, at day’s end.
The first assumption was right. Limit catches were made by all and the walleyes caught were huge by any standard. Wow, what a day. When we returned to the marina, we found the fish-cleaning station was closed for repairs and the guy usually at the station cleaning walleyes for a fee was nowhere to be found.
“No problem,” I said. “I brought my electric fillet knife.”

Cutting short our spring gobbler season by a few days has become a standard routine for wife, Paula, and me, albeit one that always leads to concerns I’ll encounter a strutting longbeard with a fly-rod in my hand instead of my Remington 870.
It has happened before. Coming off Schrader Creek one beautiful late-May morning in Pennsylvania – comfortably within legal shooting hours – I rounded a bend in the old railroad grade that parallels the stream tight to the Bradford-Sullivan county line to the sight of a gobbler, in full strut, downright glowing in the sun.

The DNR has records going back to the mid-1970s that show more than 10,000 gray fox marketed each season by hunters and trappers across Illinois.
In 2024, that number was zero – not a single gray fox pelt. The decline of the species led to legislation aimed at protecting the gray fox population that sailed through the General Assembly this spring. Gov. JB Pritzker signed House Bill 3760 into law on June 30.
With population dwindling, gray foxes now under Illinois DNR control Read More »
Ohio’s 2025 spring was cooler than normal and wet, not the typical crappie spawning conditions I have come to know and love. The summer months may bring more surprises. One thing is for sure, crappies have moved away from their shallow-water spawning areas.
Run down from the rigors of spawning, some lack the feeding aggression displayed before the spawn. Maybe this is why some anglers dismiss their chances of finding willing biters.

New York state has issued nearly 800 permits to anglers and organizations who plan to hold bass fishing tournaments around the state in 2025, as state officials have found that tourney organizers have been receptive to the system so far.
“DEC has only been notified about a few potential tournaments that were being held that were not listed on the New York Bass Tournaments Map,” Jeff Loukmas, DEC Fisheries Unit Leader, said.
