Part four of Ernest Hemingway’s “Big Two-Hearted River”

Editor’s note: Below we conclude our four-part reprinting of Ernest Hemingway’s 100-year-old short story “Big Two-Hearted River.” Just 26 years old when he published the story in a collection called “In Our Time,” in 1925, Hemingway would go on to become arguably the most important American author of the 20th Century.

Southeast Minnesota streams get a flushing; outlook is good

Despite the past week’s rainstorms that swelled and muddied rivers and streams and rendered them temporarily unfishable, stream-trout fishing across Minnesota has been good so far this year entering the July 4th holiday weekend, state officials and guides say.
Minnesota contains hundreds of miles of managed trout streams and a variety of scenic terrain where they can be found – from the North Shore of Lake Superior to the Driftless Area of the southeast.

Minnesota DNR asks anglers for input on plan for four walleyes

Changes in lake habitat, ecology, and conditions, coupled with technological advances in fishing gear and methods, are prompting the Minnesota DNR to seek public input on a possible reduction in the statewide walleye possession limit from six to four fish.
If enacted via a rulemaking process, the change would not become effective until May 2027.
“We consider this a proactive step to maintain quality walleye fishing,” said Brad Parsons, DNR Fisheries Section manager.

Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Don’t let FFS get in the way of fishing

Forward-facing sonar has changed fishing forever. It helps you stay on fish and shows what is happening in real time, but I have seen many anglers rely on it too much. I’ve watched people spend hours casting at “negative” fish just because they are there, waiting for them to turn on.

Exercise your hunting dog’s mind and reap the rewards this fall

As a hunting companion, your pup gets a lot of exercise. Busting brush, flushing pheasants and diving recklessly into the pond for that duck surely keeps him in tip-top physical shape.
But you can – and probably should – do better. For while his legs and circulatory system may be getting a workout, his brain could just be on autopilot, doing the instinctual and not getting the exercise it needs to stay sharp.
“Physical health, mental health, it’s all intertwined,” said Dr. Melissa Bain, a veterinary behavior and welfare specialist at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Annual Perry County, Ohio, kids fishing event another success

Despite a long-range weekend forecast for stormy weather in Perry County, Ohio, that called for heavy rain, the annual Perry County Sheriff’s Office Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs (HOFNOD) day took place Saturday, June 14, without a single drop of rain making an appearance.
All the participants qualified for the free hot dog and chips lunch that began at 11 a.m., but that was far from the extent of free items awaiting the young anglers.
