When you hear the words “golden shiners,” you likely think of the baitfish with which you’re trying to catch walleyes in summertime. But for some of the gals who participate in the Women Anglers of Minnesota, golden shiners has a different meaning.
“When women reach a certain age, a lot of times they can feel unseen or invisible, and when we recognized them, they kind of got teary-eyed, and it was a pretty cool moment,” said Michelle Morey, president of WAM.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced this week that a sharp-tailed grouse hunt will be held this fall, the first since 2018. The season will run from Oct. 18 to Nov. 9, 2025.
An application period will run from June 30 until Aug. 1 for entry into a limited-drawing lottery. Preference points from prior years will be honored.

You don’t have to be a biologist or range scientist to see how the land use of grasslands of North Dakota has changed.
Ashlyn Herron, a University of North Dakota master’s in biology student, is using technology to determine if high-quality grassland habitat restoration through the Meadowlark Initiative is successfully occurring. The Meadowlark Initiative is a statewide strategy that teams landowners, conservation groups, scientists and others to enhance, restore and sustain native grasslands in North Dakota.

CO Andrew Ladzinski (Bemidji) dedicated his time to ATV enforcement and fishing enforcement. He also followed up on a potential shoreline alteration violation. He also provided a ride-along to a high school student interested in becoming a conservation officer.
Minnesotans are blessed with tremendous largemouth bass-fishing opportunities in the northland, with lakes harboring both good numbers of bass and good-sized fish. And where I live, largemouth bass-fishing pressure is limited.

The Minnesota DNR is asking for input on several special fishing regulation proposals. Each year, the agency reviews all existing fishing regulations, proposes new special regulations that apply to individual waters, and asks the public for input about the proposals. All new special regulations are reviewed on a regular basis to evaluate effectiveness.
