President Trump wants to double the amount of oil coursing through Alaska’s vast pipeline system and build a massive natural gas project as its “big, beautiful twin,” a top administration official said June 2 while touring a prolific oil field near the Arctic Ocean.

It’s easy to find solitude on the lake in the spring. Ditto the fall, especially as the calendar flips closer to winter. But summer? Better be prepared to either deal with the traffic resulting from tubing, wake boarding, and water skiing, or sacrifice on sleep and hit the water early in the morning or late in the evening.
Plenty of anglers do it. After all, if the choice is to stay home or share the lake, most anglers are going to grin and bear the extra activity. But there’s another option that allows you to wet a line and, often as not, avoid the crowds.
Welcome to the river.

It might seem as if it’s a bit early, but it’s not. This year’s crop of whitetail bucks is out there, already sporting the first month of antler growth. And while the bow opener is still three months away in Minnesota, and the gun opener another six weeks after that, the time to start gathering some deer intel is now.
This is easy enough with a couple of trail cameras, but there are some locations where you might want to focus your early-summer reconnaissance.

I just returned from a trip to southeastern Arizona. The objective of this adventure was to capture images of as many warbler species as possible. So, what are warblers and why did I go to Arizona to find them?
Warblers are a group of small birds, often colorful and produce rich musical songs. We are fortunate because our New World warblers are different from warblers in other parts of the world. The “New World” refers to the Americas. So our warblers don’t exist in Europe, Asia or Africa.

As a parent of two teenagers and a coach at our school, I have seen the changes in kids during this electronics age. We were mean, mean parents when we did not allow our first child to get a cell phone until they were 14. Jetting off to Yellowstone for the weekend might not be in your budget, but there is a lot of nature around us, if you are willing to get out and look.

It’s been a bit over 45 years ago when I first heard Joe was selling his old aluminum rowboat. I was instantly interested in purchasing it, though at the time, I was not sure I could afford it.
We were camping at a small Adirondack lake not far from Joe and his wife Lori’s campsite just up a little hill from our seasonal site. Joe was standing by their campfire when I approached him. When he saw me coming, he cheerfully greeted me. After returning his greeting along with a bit of small talk, I asked him what he was asking for his boat.
There’s something about an old rowboat that’s hard to quit Read More »
