Wisconsin DNR releases summary of 2024 CWD sampling efforts

With the conclusion of the 2024 deer hunting seasons, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) shared a summary of the year’s Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) sampling efforts.
For the 2024 season, the DNR focused its efforts on increasing sample collection in designated 2024 Fall Priority Areas. Testing was available statewide, but the additional samples tested from the priority areas helped the DNR better understand disease levels and distribution in areas with recent detections.

Buckeye sapling at Natural Resources Park marks Ohio State’s football championship

There’s a new Ohio Buckeye sapling in the Buckeye Grove in the Natural Resources Park at the Ohio Expo Center. And this one wasn’t planted by a governor.
Three members of the 2024 Ohio State University (OSU) football team planted the tree on April 24 to commemorate the team’s victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish that brought the national championship trophy to Columbus. Traditionally, buckeye trees in the grove are planted by Ohio’s governors to commemorate their terms in office.

According to Kittson County Sheriff Matthew Vig’s report dated April 25, as several elk were walking past the residence of Carl Christopherson, Christopherson allegedly grabbed his .223 rifle, opened his kitchen window, and shot one of the elk in the head.

More than 10,000 turkeys killed so far in Ohio’s South Zone

Ohio’s 2025 spring wild turkey hunters who are running and gunning are largely experiencing a repeat performance.
As of April 28, the 2025 spring turkey harvest total “has closely mirrored the harvest over the same period in both 2023 and 2024,” says Mark Wiley, the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s biologist in charge of everything wild turkey for the state.

Christine Thomas: Firing up the smoker at the little cabin

“With Laurie Ross’s rub, the flavor will be amazing. My desired internal temperature is above 190 (degrees) for brisket. There is a lot of collagen in brisket that does not break down at lower temps. The last brisket I made took 18 hours. So much time invested,” advised Larry Bonde.
Bonde is my “go-to” guy for all things meat.
