Wisconsin’s spawning sturgeon on the Fox River mean an opportunity for research

A local high school fishing club was able to get up close and personal with spawning lake sturgeon on the Fox River in Wisconsin.
The annual sturgeon spawning ritual on the Fox River in Princeton kicked off with DNR crews using electrofishing boats and a light electrical current to temporarily stun sturgeon so they could be captured and “scienced.” Members of Princeton High School’s fishing club waited on shore to help measure and tag fish.

Artists, fish-lure makers give floating trash a new life

A social-media friend recently sent me a link to YouTube videos about using “feminine napkins” as bait for catching bass, catfish, lake trout, and rainbow trout.
He considered the videos “LOL,” and said the anglers were “true innovators” who offered some great tips for fishing with tampons on the water or through the ice. Maybe so, but I don’t want to catch fish that badly.

Bob Gwizdz: Examining the benefits of spring burns for native grasses

If you drive the backroads of southern Michigan, you likely notice some grass fires or the charred results of recent prescribed burns in uninhabited swatches across the landscape. And though it’s wildfire season, it’s a fair bet they are the result of deliberately set burns.
“Native prairies of North America burned regularly, either naturally or we’re finding out native Americans burned them intentionally,” said Todd Losee, an environmental consultant who spent a recent Saturday burning part of his prairie as well parts of two his buddies’ properties.

Avian influenza naturally occurs in certain wildlife

Wisconsin is seeing a wide variety of mortality of wildlife species due to the H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), but the risk of the virus to the general public is relatively low.
Jasmine Batten, wildlife health specialist for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), told the Natural Resources Board (NRB) that the avian influenza routinely and naturally occurs among waterfowl and other wild aquatic birds worldwide.

Here’s how to stalk the aggressive spring pickerel in Pennsylvania

The stalks rising from the lake’s silted bottom were thick, heavy and straight, like a wooden fence row.
Everything seemed calm until I saw a flash of green poke through the slats. Then the surface erupted in a sprinkle of silver and red as a school of shiners flared their gills making a desperate effort to escape. Luckily my streamer was suspended in that commotion and I felt the hard pull as the predator made its strike.
