The stalks rising from the lake’s silted bottom were thick, heavy and straight, like a wooden fence row.
Everything seemed calm until I saw a flash of green poke through the slats. Then the surface erupted in a sprinkle of silver and red as a school of shiners flared their gills making a desperate effort to escape. Luckily my streamer was suspended in that commotion and I felt the hard pull as the predator made its strike.
