It wasn’t long ago when the best way to introduce youngsters to hunting youngsters to hunting involved a .22 rifle and some squirrels. Or maybe a single-shot shotgun and some cottontails. Today, most kids get their first experiences as actual hunters by way of the spring turkey season.

My first fishing trip of the season was successful. The cohos were in southern Lake Michigan, right on schedule, and my friend and I caught our limits plus a bonus brown trout.
This column isn’t about the baits, the place, or the other strategies that made a fun day on the lake. It’s about the work at the end of the trip. The marina we used has a fish cleaning station, but of course it wasn’t open.
Years ago, I had a book of outdoor stories by Ted Trueblood. He wrote for various outdoor magazines. In that book were two stories that stuck with me: The first: “How Not to Get Lost.” The second: “Lost!.”
Two pieces of advice he gave were, “The friendly woods at 8 a.m. can become terrifying at 4 p.m,” and “When you go into the woods always be prepared to spend the night.”
