Illinois bill focuses on ‘special’ deer harvests

A bill filed in the Illinois Senate would allow hunters to help provide fresh meat to food pantries.
It would also give hunters more opportunity to provide venison. Senate Bill 2160 was filed by State Sen. Patrick Joyce, R-Kankakee, and would amend the Human Services Act to provide grants to food banks and other entities for the purchase of venison meat from processors and butchers.

Knowing the right and wrong time to shoot is vital for turkey hunters

As soon as I pulled the trigger on the head-bobbing tom, I knew I had missed – again! Over the years I’ve missed a total of five longbeards. Not bad for more than four decades of spring turkey hunting in the Midwest. But the sum of misses could have been zero if I had followed a few simple rules.
Take the head-bobber for example.

Commentary: Consider the effects of federal funding cuts on Great Lakes fishery, sea lamprey control

I retired Sept. 30, 2024, after 34-plus years of federal service. In my last position, I led the Great Lakes Fishery Commission Sea Lamprey Technical Assistance Program at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center in La Crosse, Wis. I reference my previous role to demonstrate my knowledge and familiarity with the subject I’ll discuss – not as a government representative.
The Great Lakes fishery collapsed in the mid-1900s due to overfishing and because of intensive predation from invasive parasitic sea lamprey that became established throughout the Great Lakes following improvements to the Welland Canal between lakes Erie and Ontario.

Dan Ladd: Range time now equals success in the fall

Judging from the correspondence I have with sportsmen who are my age, or older, vision is an ongoing issue and one that affects the way we go about things in the outdoors. This is especially the case with firearms and the reason many deer hunters invariably end up with a scope on their hunting rifles, regardless of whether that’s their wish, or not.
Being a mobile Adirondack woodland hunter, the thought of a scope on my lever-action Northern Zone deer rifle is unappealing. Actually, I’ve been there, as at one time – decades ago – I gave it a try.

Streams of Thought: Minnesota foragers gather at the State Capitol

I don’t necessarily fashion myself a forager; however, I’ll certainly pick wild blackberries by the bucket when the gettin’s good, as it was last summer.
I used to perform futile searches for wild blueberries on nearby state land. But even the best of my friends refused to give away their secret hot spots, and I couldn’t seem to find the berries before being mauled by bugs, so I planted a few of my own bushes.

Raccoons, muskrats represent highest pelt volume at Illinois Trappers Association fur sale

The Illinois Trappers Association held its annual fur sale in Strasburg on Feb. 15.
Raccoons, an Illinois staple, have seen record low prices over the last few years. Well over 250,000 raccoons were trapped in the Midwest alone in 2012. That number this year, nationwide, is likely to be under 50,000.
