For whitetails in much of Minnesota, it’s been another winter of recovery

The ease of last year’s winter season appeared unlikely to repeat itself as far as the Minnesota deer herd is concerned. However, as February draws to a close, the winter of 2024-25 seems destined to fall into the “mild” classification once again. Just not as mild as a year ago.

Fired employees fear beloved Yosemite National Park will lose its luster

Yosemite National Park employees who recently were fired by the Trump administration worry cuts will affect the experience of visitors and the welfare of wildlife that thrive in the popular vacation destination located in California’s Sierra Nevada.
Yosemite is home to giant sequoia trees and a haven for myriad wildlife species. El Capitan, a 3,000-foot (914-meter) wall of sheer granite and possibly the world’s most fabled rock face, attracts climbers from around the world.

Walleyes still making waves on Coldwater Lake in Michigan’s Isabella County

Walleyes haven’t been planted in Isabella County’s Coldwater Lake since 2018, but anglers are still catching a lot of nice sized ’eyes.
“A few years back the DNR truck broke down, and they had to dump all the fish they had left (in the truck) into the lake,” said Greg Clark, owner of Schafer’s Bait and Sport Shop. “A lot of people got mad and said the walleyes were eating all the other fish so they stopped planting them.

Bird flu likely in waterfowl die-offs from Michigan

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently has sampled dead wild birds suspected to be positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza at multiple locations across Lower Michigan.
The DNR’s ongoing disease surveillance indicates that HPAI is widespread in wild bird populations throughout the state.
