Outdoor Observations: Will Michigan deer-baiting ban be lifted? History says no

Another bill to legalize baiting of white-tailed deer in Michigan has been introduced in the state legislature.
State Sen. Michele Hoitenga (R-Cadillac) introduced SB 065 earlier this month which, if approved by both the Senate and House, would need Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s signature for approval.
If history is any teacher, I don’t anticipate Gov. Whitmer signing this bill. This isn’t the first piece of legislation introduced in Lansing in an effort to overturn the baiting ban.

Struggling with a mouth call for turkeys? Here’s why that may be

If you’ve ever bought a mouth call for turkey hunting only to give it a couple of hours before declaring that it’s not the call for you … well, you’re not alone.
Most mouth calls cost around $10, and maybe that explains why they are easy to discard when you don’t get the sound you’re looking for right away.
“You don’t need to be proficient with a mouth call to kill turkeys, but there are so many advantages to a mouth call,” said Minnesota’s Shane Simpson.

Ohio Insider: Even with overall increase, antlerless harvest still not moving the needle

With nearly 240,000 whitetails harvested during the recently completed 2024-25 deer hunting season, it was a good year to be a deer hunter in Ohio.
Especially if you were chasing a buck. Ohio hunters set a new record in the number of bucks killed (100,766) for a single season. All of this is well and good until you speak to one of Ohio’s deer management biologists.

Some of the top past, present, and future anglers meet up at Ohio fishing expo

The annual National Fishing Expo recently returned to Columbus for its traditional three days of everything fishing.
The Feb. 7-9 affair featured fishing tackle, travel destinations, and top-notch professional anglers sharing their insights at hourlong seminars held at a mini arena semi-circling the Hawg Trough, a huge aquarium on wheels stocked with gamefish. The biggest draw at the 2025 Expo was former Bassmaster Classic champion Mike Iaconelli, of Pitts Grove, New Jersey.
