Commentary: New administration reignites debate around mining, Minnesota’s Boundary Waters

On Feb. 5, U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber (Minnesota, District 8) re-introduced the Superior National Forest Restoration Act, which would reverse the historic 2023 Biden administration decision to protect 225,504 acres of the Superior National Forest in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness headwaters from mining development and degradation for 20 years (Public Land Order 7917).

Oxygen levels bump up in some Minnesota lakes, potentially impacting fish

While hard-water anglers are reveling this season with the opportunity to fish on thick, clear ice, the clarity and a relative lack of snow have turned some lakes into “greenhouses,” allowing aquatic plants to more readily produce oxygen.
“I haven’t seen this quality (of) ice very often in 35 years. So, it’s pretty unique. We got a real greenhouse effect going on, basically, with that clear ice,” said Chris Domeier, Ortonville area DNR fisheries supervisor.

Firearm-buying habits go through period of change at start of second Trump term

The American shooting public’s interest in buying firearms has slowed some, though experts are not anticipating another “Trump Slump.”
Following President Barrack Obama’s eight-year term, firearms sales were approaching the Kármán line where outer space begins. Then gun sales fell back to Earth under Donald Trump, hence, the “Trump Slump.”

Michigan DNR promotes mass timber development

Ever heard of mass timber? It’s a growing trend in the forest products industry in which wood is used to make structural elements such as columns, beams or panels for construction products instead of using steel or concrete or in conjunction with traditional building materials.
Scott Whitcomb, director of public land at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, says you can think of mass timber as “plywood on steroids.”

New Minnesota DNR advisory committee meets for first time

The Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee, the new iteration of the Minnesota DNR’s citizen oversight committees, met for the first time on Monday, Feb. 3, for a kickoff.
“We built momentum in the first meeting,” said Eli Mansfield, chair of the committee and Minnesota chair of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. “We got to know what folks were excited to learn about and excited to do. And I think that’s a huge balance of making sure we’re successful: balancing learning and doing.”

Recipes for a successful shed-hunting season

The late-winter blues are officially upon us. Ice fishing is coming to a close, it’s the end of most hunting seasons for Pennsylvania residents and the rivers and lakes are a little too chilly for your average open water angler. For a select few though, mid-February through April marks “the most wonderful time of the year” – shed season.
