Pennsylvania Game Commission grants early OK to new rules for ag deer taking

The Pennsylvania Game Commission approved measures to address growing concerns about crop damage during the agency’s quarterly meeting on Jan. 25.
The Game Commission board granted preliminary approval to four measures aimed at expanding the agricultural deer control permit program, also known as “ag tag.” All changes need final approval at the board’s April meeting before they can be enacted.

Did you eat tag soup this past deer season? Take stock of why

For my first five deer seasons, I ate tag soup. To say the least, this was a very humbling and frustrating beginning.
I had sold myself on the idea that to become a man, one had to be a proficient deer hunter and to end five seasons without filling a tag made me feel like a family failure. Though I eventually began knocking down my share of bucks, still, whenever I would finish out a season with the “you’ll get ‘em next year” speech, I would revert back to that insecure kid who counted fruitless days afield as a loss.

Ohio anglers realized short window of inland ice fishing

Ohio’s legion of ice anglers had about a 10-day window of good ice fishing this year.
However, at press time for this edition of Ohio Outdoor News in late January, things were changing quickly. A big warm up in temperatures had the remaining ice-fishing possibilities a big gamble at best. Temperatures were predicted well into the 40s for much of the extended forecast. While it lasted, though, the ice fishing in mid-January was pretty good.

Pennsylvania’s Class A stream-stocking exemptions method altered

Since the beginning of “Operation FUTURE” in 1981, Pennsylvania streams having a thriving population of wild trout have been removed from the stocking list. These streams, labeled Class A because of their high trout biomass, can provide excellent fishing without stocking.
The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission regularly receives requests for some of these formally stocked streams to be returned to the stocking list.

Could ‘master hunter program’ in Pennsylvania lead to more permissions on private lands?

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is considering an advanced hunter education program to certify hunters with the goal of opening up more private land.
Dubbed the “master hunter program,” Game Commission Executive Director Stephen Smith likened it an enhanced hunter safety course aimed to make landowners more comfortable with allowing hunters on their properties.

Ohio Trailblazers: Pay attention to the fish pattern to catch more steelhead

John Breedlove’s mother once told him that he was the most observant person she knew.
That type of personality helps when you’re a serious steelhead fisherman as Breedlove has become known in Ohio’s Mahoning Valley. He pays attention to the fish and in turn catches more than his fair share of the lake-run rainbow trout.

Michigan Outdoor Observations: New legislation introduced to delist the gray wolf; might it actually work this time?

Gray wolves have bolted back into the spotlight with the introduction of legislation that could remove them from federal protection.
The Pet and Livestock Protection Act, introduced last month by Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) and Congressman Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.), would delist the gray wolf from the Endangered Species Act list and return management to the states.

Michigan’s midwinter angling is made for panfish through the ice

With most lakes locked up tight this year, anglers can dial in some excellent panfish fishing on southwest Michigan lakes like Gull, Gun, and the Randall Lake chain, according to Michigan DNR fisheries biologist Brian Gunderman.
“The key is always safe ice in this part of the state,” said Gunderman, “but given a typical winter, expect Gull and Gun lakes and the Randall Lake Chain to produce good fishing for various panfish, especially bluegills.”
