Minnesota Senate bill allows youth to build preference points for bear before they’re old enough to draw a license

Allowing youth to earn preference points before turning 10 could help ensure that they’re able to hunt that season or shortly thereafter, and not start to accrue points upon turning 10. (Stock photo)

Minnesota’s Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee on Feb. 4 supported S.F. 689, which would allow youth hunters to start earning preference points for black bear hunting before they turn 10 years old – the age at which they’re allowed to hunt bears.
While the proposed bill doesn’t offer an age at which young hunters may begin to apply to receive preference points before their 10th birthday, bill author Sen. Nathan Wesenberg, R-Little Falls, estimated it takes around five or six preference points to earn a tag.
