Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Great time to target the lesser-chased species

After two rough ice seasons, we’re finally experiencing a “normal” winter in the Midwest. The ice is in great shape, and we’re not dealing with an overabundance of snow. And, the fish are biting!
My tip today isn’t to help you catch more fish; it’s to help you catch different fish. As the days get longer and spring draws near, we’re about to see some of the best fishing of the season – not just for perch and panfish, but for the lesser-chased species.

Trout Unlimited joins pollutant lawsuit against Minnesota agencies

Minnesota Trout Unlimited has joined a lawsuit by other state environmental groups to speed up efforts to address nitrate contamination in waters in southeastern Minnesota, home to roughly 700 miles of cold-water trout streams that provide some of the best trout angling in the Upper Midwest.

New York trappers ready for fur auctions

The fur market of 2024-25 will have ups and downs for pricing and for which species is in demand. This season, there are several species in demand and several at stagnant pricing if any pricing at all.
For some species, if trappers have an offer to buy them you very well may be money ahead selling to that buyer than shopping around. Certain species have virtually no demand.

Dean Bortz: Should stands, blinds be left overnight on Wisconsin public land? Plenty of mixed opinions

In January 2017, the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board approved a rule change that has since allowed hunters to place stands and ground blinds overnight on state-owned land north of Hwy. 64 from September through January.
It sounds as though the level of sportsmanship related to stand and blind placement may be deteriorating and we’ll likely see a citizen resolution looking to nix the practice entering the spring hearings in April. I recently asked readers their thoughts on overnight stand and blind placement. That drew a strong response for and against. Here are the thoughts of a few readers.

Commentary: A cold winter in southern Illinois leads to wild thoughts

One of the side effects of retirement is a person has more time to think. In my case, I’m not sure that’s productive.
During the polar vortex that gripped Middle America during January, I spent several frigid mornings driving through Sahara Woods State Recreation Area in Illinois. It’s a wild piece of property, located on ground that used to be a coal mine. It doesn’t look like much, but it’s a wildlife paradise.
