In Minnesota, ‘community science’ has big impact on conservation efforts

Here’s a resolution for 2025: more community science. All in favor, raise your hand … or wing, or fin, or whatever.
In case readers are not aware, community science (alternately, “citizen science”) happens when people with non-scientific backgrounds gather data that contributes to scientific understanding. Examples abound across disciplines, especially in the natural sciences. For outdoor enthusiasts, it means opportunities to contribute to the management of natural resources.

Minnesota Supreme Court ruling puts a hold on state House of Reps business

On Friday, Jan. 24, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in favor of the DFL argument that 68 members must be present to carry out any official business within the Minnesota House of Representatives.
That ruling effectively voids all the work House Republicans had conducted since the session officially kicked off Jan. 14. Since the start of the session, the House Republicans’ maintained that only 67 members needed to be present to conduct business because there were presently only 133 seated members of the chamber.

Results are in from Ohio’s 2023 deer hunter, landowner survey: ‘We need to do something’

Every three to five years the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife sends out a survey to Ohio’s hunters and farmers to ask their opinion on deer population size.
Information from that survey gives Mike Tonkovich, deer program administrator for the Division of Wildlife, information to help decide what Ohio’s legal limit for whitetails should be in all 88 counties. In the 2015 statewide survey, 50% of hunters said there were too few deer and 29% of farmers said there were too many, Tonkovich said. Those were both dissatisfied populations. What to do?

How do Canada geese respond to hunting pressure? They didn’t flee far in Pennsylvania study

Geese appear to understand when and where hunting takes place but are willing to risk the danger to stay close to resources and their primary habitats, according to a new study led by researchers at Penn State.
In findings recently published in Landscape Ecology, the researchers reported that when managing a mixed landscape wildlife management area (WMA) comprising cropland, forest, lake and wetlands for both waterfowl and human use, providing sufficient spatial refuge for geese may help buffer the effects of hunting.

Do you follow proper ice-fishing etiquette? Here’s what to consider

With ice fishing well underway on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods (LOTW), the region’s tourism bureau thought that it would be timely and wise to list some common-sense rules of ice fishing etiquette for those who never learned, have forgotten, or choose to ignore those rules.
While some of these practices may be well-known to experienced hard-water fishermen, newer participants to this popular winter sport may truly not yet know when they are committing errors on the ice.

Bob Gwizdz: Making sense of the unwritten rules in hunting and fishing

Hunting and fishing are a lot like baseball in some ways. There are rules and there are unwritten rules. Like you always take a 3-0 pitch. There’s no penalty for swinging at a 3-0 pitch – except for the occasional side eye – but you rarely see guys swinging away. The bulk of players respect the unwritten rule.
In hunting and fishing the unwritten rules are less well respected and break down according to whichever tribe with which you associate.
