If the success of Wisconsin’s annual Lake Winnebago system sturgeon spearing season depends on the strength of a “three-legged stool” that supports the season, then the 2025 rendition should have at least two strong corners – increased “bloodworm” numbers and perhaps some very good water clarity/ice conditions, cracks bridged notwithstanding.
Meanwhile, another forage base heavily used by the Winnebago system’s lake sturgeon, gizzard shad, is down, so sturgeon may be keying on bloodworm “beds.”
The Wisconsin DNR’s Randy Johnson will ask Natural Resources Board (NRB) members to approve an increase in the black bear harvest quota and kill tag levels for the 2025 season when the board meets Wednesday, Jan. 22, in Madison.
Johnson will ask – with support from the Conservation Congress and the DNR bear committee – for a 2025 bear harvest quota of 4,075 animals. That’s up from the 2024 quota of 3,850.

Much of the world changed thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are still living in its aftermath and will be for the foreseeable future. Decades ago, much of the Great Lakes fish populations changed due to invasive sea lampreys infesting the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes are still living in the aftermath of the “lamprey pandemic.”
Granted, conflating these two pandemics may seem a stretch, but there is a connection between them.
