Minnesota DNR warns anglers to beware of ice heaves that are more prevalent this winter

While this season’s lake ice already has delivered a better start to ice fishing season than the past two Minnesota winters, reports of numerous pressure ridges have demanded some caution among anglers.
“Just because somebody is out there with a vehicle and a truck, doesn’t mean you need to be out there with a vehicle and a truck. Don’t let that be the test. Test (the ice) yourself,” said CO Bobby Stringer, of Wheaton.

Lynx on the loose in Scotland highlight debate over reintroducing species into the wild

Scottish environmental activists want to reintroduce the lynx into the forests of the Highlands. But not this way.
At least two lynx, a medium-sized wildcat extinct in Scotland for hundreds of years, were spotted in the Highlands on Wednesday, raising concerns that a private breeder had illegally released the predators into the wild.

Variety awaits anglers on Oakland’s Pontiac Lake

A few decades ago local anglers considered it a waste of time to even consider fishing on Oakland County’s Pontiac Lake.
After a dam repair project in the 1980s went awry, the entire fish population in Pontiac Lake was wiped out. New fish including bluegill, bass, pike, and crappie were stocked in the 1980s, but it took years and some tweaking by fisheries managers to get the fishery in this 585-acre lake back up to par.
