Minnesota DNR to survey state’s pheasant hunters that will gauge opinions on possible changes

After roughly a decade since the last examination, the Minnesota DNR will conduct a pheasant hunter survey beginning in the middle of January.
Dubbed a “mixed mode survey,” the goal is to survey 4,500 state pheasant stamp holders. The survey questions will focus heavily on hunter regulations, hunter satisfaction, and hunter economics. DNR officials stress that the online survey is about collecting facts surrounding state pheasant hunters, not necessarily making any regulatory changes.
“The regulation part is mostly what we’ve heard over time from hunters and DNR managers that they think will improve pheasant hunting.”

Minnesota DNR says avian flu is the likely killer of waterfowl in the state

Minnesota DNR officials say evidence is pointing to avian influenza as the cause of death of several Canada geese and some swans reported dead on the ice – typically next to open-water locations – of southern Minnesota lakes.
Initial testing indicates that about a dozen waterfowl samples tested positive via “general” avian influenza testing at the University of Minnesota’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, according to Erik Hildebrand, wildlife health supervisor with the Minnesota DNR.

Commentary: Hunting and fishing license dollars aren’t enough for conservation

Legislation that addresses the root causes of a problem is far less common than legislation that addresses its symptoms. For this reason, it’s both predictable and unfortunate that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Legislature are once again considering a hunting and fishing license price increase.
Without doubt, the department’s Wildlife and Fisheries Divisions are in increasingly desperate need of new funding. Yet the cause of this shortfall isn’t that hunters and anglers pay too little for licenses. Instead, its that everyone else pays nothing at all.

Menominee Co. sees second highest whitetail harvest of Michigan firearms season

Although U.P. deer numbers generally are lower from previous years over most of the region, at least one county still has plenty of whitetails. Menominee County came in second place statewide for the number of deer reported taken during the 2024 firearms season at 3,513. The only county in the state with a higher reported harvest as of December 3 was Sanilac at 4,094.
