Minnesota man ventures south to answer a calling in world championship

When Mike Anderson exited the calling stage in the third and final round of the 89th annual World’s Championship Duck Calling Contest in Stuttgart, Ark., on Nov. 30, his future plans had already been decided.
Anderson, 44, of Mankato, Minn., who won the prestigious event in 2009, had decided, regardless of how well he did, he would continue to compete.
“I decided I was going to give myself a five-year window – maybe until I’m 50 – then I’ll probably hang it up for good,” said Anderson, who placed 12th among 56 of the world’s best competition callers.

Minnesota’s deer harvest to top 2023; crossbow take nears equal footing with vertical bows

St. Paul — While Minnesota’s total deer harvest remained locked at a total of 156,509 as of Tuesday morning (the harvest reporting service remained “down” since Nov. 28, officials said), that’s a number high enough to likely ensure total harvest exceeds that of a year ago.

Legislation could give more land to Leech Lake Band in Minnesota

Minnesota U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, is sponsoring legislation to expand on the acreage that was given from the federal government to the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in 2020.
A proposed amendment to the legislation includes 4,362 acres that should have been a part of the original bill four years ago but was missed in the proposal, Smith says.

Pro Tip of the Week: Deer season’s pause on grouse hunting could benefit grouse hunters

This time of year, it’s best to focus on areas around beaver ponds, swamp edges, and conifer trees. These three types of terrain provide excellent winter habitat, and the birds tend to stay close and hold tight, which is particularly advantageous for hunters who may not have dogs.

Bob Gwizdz: Michigan sportsmen and women set to bear brunt of resource management funding… again

Legislation will be introduced very soon raising the costs of hunting and fishing licenses in Michigan.
Department of Natural Resources insiders tell me they have identified legislative sponsors for the new fee package and quiet discussions with other legislators lead them to believe the new fee structure has legs. Generally speaking, the license structure will remain the same, but licenses will cost about $10 or $12 more each, if the package passes as proposed.
