Florida’s iconic Key deer face an uncertain future

The world’s only Key deer, the smallest subspecies of the whitetailed deer, are found in piney and marshy wetlands bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico on the Florida Keys. For years, their biggest threat was being struck by vehicles speeding along U.S. Highway 1 or local roads.
But those waters surrounding the islands now pose the biggest long-term risk for this herd of about 800 deer as sea rise jeopardizes their sole habitat.

This autumn, consider Fall Lake’s numerous ’eyes, girthy pike, and more in Minnesota’s Lake County

The main draw on this 2,258-acre fishery near Ely is its abundance of walleyes. Fall is noted for producing eating-size walleyes, along with some trophy-caliber fish, and its consistently high walleye population is maintained entirely by natural reproduction.

Feds to restrict drilling, renewables in U.S. West to aid the sage grouse

President Joe Biden’s administration on Nov. 8 proposed tighter restrictions on oil, solar, and wind energy development across more than 6,500 square miles of federal land in the U.S. West to protect a declining bird species.
However, it is doubtful the changes will survive under President-elect Donald Trump. Greater sage grouse were once found across much of the U.S. West. Their numbers plummeted in recent decades because of energy exploration, wildfires, disease, and other pressures.

Minnesota’s Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Catchin’ big fish in the fall

It is a must if you’re out fishing with a crew of anglers to have minnows. Fathead minnows are good. Real nice fatheads are better – meaning fatheads and not a mix of crappie minnows being sold as fatheads. Use minnows the way “Tackle Terry” Tuma talks about – when the fish are negative or neutral.

Steve Carney: Tips for using a deer decoy in late November

This is the time of the deer-hunting season when I pull out my doe decoy that I’ve named “Bess.” She rests comfortably in my pole building all season, and then, when the whitetail rut arrives, she heads back to the field with me.
Utilizing a deer decoy can enhance your chances for success. Here are the reasons – and some tips – for why I use a deer decoy in late November.

Minnesota hunters rescued in two Kandiyohi water bodies

High winds and hunters kept Kandiyohi County deputies and conservation officers with the DNR occupied last weekend as ripping winds contributed to two rescue operations in the western Minnesota county.
According to a press release from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, Nov. 16, sheriff’s office personnel responded to two separate water rescue incidents in Kandiyohi County.
