Central New York village faces decision on exotic mute swans

White swans have an outsize presence in this upstate New York village measuring less than 2 square miles. Residents say it’s hard to imagine Manlius, near Syracuse in Onondaga County, without the European mute swans that have inhabited a pond in the village center for more than 100 years. Until recently, they didn’t have to.
But the killing of one of the village’s swans in 2023 set off a battle with regulators that is forcing Manlius to make a difficult decision about the birds’ future.

Wisconsin DNR collects 3.5 million Chinook eggs for Lake Michigan stocking

Wisconsin DNR fisheries crews handled 4,580 king salmon at the Strawberry Creek facility near Sturgeon Bay this fall, about 10% above than the long-term average.
More than 3.5 million Chinook eggs were taken from more than 600 of the healthiest females and fertilized with sperm from a cross-section of males. After a series of steps designed to produce disease-resistance and improved hatching success, the eggs were trucked to the Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery.

American Wildlife Conservation Foundation, a century-old conservation group, closes shop

A key organization involved in the conservation and protection of game species in New York and elsewhere has shut its doors for good, but not before handing off its mission – and resources – to other groups.
The American Wildlife Conservation Foundation (AWCF) is a charitable organization that funded research, education, and conservation initiatives across North America.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signs six gun bills into law

Claiming gun violence in New York City has declined 47% since she took office, Gov. Kathy Hochul also signed package of six bills that she said will further strengthen New York’s gun laws.
Included in the package is a bill passed earlier this year by both houses that now requires firearms dealers to post tobacco-style safety warnings. Hochul also said in a press release that law enforcement agencies statewide have seized over 7,700 illegal guns so far this year.

Dan Ladd: Still some confusion with New York’s new self-printed license format

Although New York’s bear hunting and archery seasons for deer have been open for a while, and there was the September antlerless deer hunt in parts of the Southern Zone, things amped up when the Northern Zone muzzleloading season began the weekend before going to print with this edition.
And of course, the talk, and even the misinformation, continues regarding the new plain paper, print-your-own tag system implemented this year.

Marinette County’s Peshtigo Flowage worth a visit for Wisconsin anglers

Anglers in the Peshtigo area don’t have far to go to find a diverse fishery because there’s one in their own backyard.
It’s been five years since the DNR last did a deep dive into the Peshtigo Flowage, an impoundment of the Peshtigo River that flows through the city of Peshtigo. Fisheries crews captured more than 1,800 fish during that 2019 survey.
