Huge smallmouth bass from the St. Lawrence River breaks the New York state record

Dante Piraino of Baldwinsville, in Onondaga County, while fishing in a state BASS Federation tournament out of Ogdensburg on the St. Lawrence River on Sept. 22, hauled in a 9-pound smallmouth bass near Cape Vincent to smash the previous record in New York by 10 ounces.
It became official on Oct. 10 when DEC released the information from its press office. The previous record catch was an 8-pound, 6-ounce bronzeback from Cayuga Lake in 2022, reeled in by Tom Russell, of Albion.

Cost of wolf-killed livestock, pets up this year in Wisconsin

Wolf conflicts with livestock and pets are running ahead of 2023 at this point of the year. Part of that could be increasing wolf populations, or wolves moving closer to inhabited areas as pack areas fill up in wilder parts of Wisconsin.

Part of this change also could be that wolves are simply hungrier this year than last after an open winter that might have made it more difficult for wolves to kill deer. Deep snowpack favors wolves over deer. With the past mild winter, deer were not as easy of a target as they were in the winter of 2022-23, one of the more severe winters in the northern tier of counties in recent memory.

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) received a glimpse of the new 2% increase for a “housekeeping” type of budget the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is requesting for 2025 through 2027.
The DNR submitted its budget request to the governor via the Department of Administration Sept. 16, and gave an overview to the board at its Sept. 25 meeting. Maggie Hutter, DNR budget director, said the budget does not include any new initiatives.

Steve Pollick: This year’s drought in Ohio provides wildlife lessons to ponder

If I were a minnow in Froggy Bottom Creek, out behind my house, I would be worried about losing life and limb.
The current drought, which has afflicted more than 90% of Ohio and all or parts of 87 of 88 counties at this writing, is drying up its aquatic home and the remaining “little fish” are being crowded into skinnier and skinnier water. I corralled a couple of them the other day and asked my friend and colleague, Fred Snyder, about them.

Autumn trout fishing in Pennsylvania means colors galore… above and below the water

More than 130 tree species plus a mixture of shrubs, which grow from sea level to elevations several thousand feet above sea level, ensure that Pennsylvania’s landscape bursts with an assortment of vibrant colors each October.
Autumn anglers appreciate the scenic surroundings while seeking to hook the colorful, freshwater fish, and perhaps no fishermen find more satisfaction in catching and viewing their colorful quarry in this environment than the fly-fishermen who wade the Keystone State’s streams in search of trout.
