Angler files federal lawsuit against Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission

A federal lawsuit has been filed against the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission seeking to strike down a state law that permits waterways conservation officers from entering private property without a warrant.
According to a complaint filed on Sept. 22 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Tim Thomas, of Susquehanna County, claimed Fish & Boat Commission Waterways Conservation Officer Ty Moon entered his property multiple times in 2023 regarding alleged fishing violations that were later dismissed in court.

Ohio drought affects wildlife in various ways

Ohioans finally got a much-needed shot of rain during the week of Sept. 23, but most of the state has been under severe drought conditions for much of the summer and early fall.
The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Water Resources is urging the public to use water resources wisely due to the dry conditions across Ohio. The division is working with partners to monitor the ongoing impacts of drought across the entire state. Drought conditions can have varying effects on wildlife, says Kyle Casey, a wildlife communications specialist for the Division of Wildlife.

Montana man gets 6 months in prison for cloning giant sheep and breeding it

An 81-year-old Montana man was sentenced Monday to six months in federal prison for illegally using tissue and testicles from large sheep hunted in Central Asia and the U.S. to create hybrid sheep for captive trophy hunting in Texas and Minnesota.
U.S. District Court Judge Brian Morris said he struggled to come up with a sentence for Arthur “Jack” Schubarth of Vaughn, Montana. He said he weighed Schubarth’s age and lack of a criminal record with a sentence that would deter anyone else from trying to “change the genetic makeup of the creatures” on the earth.

Nature Smart: Get to know the amazing black bear

We could see it moving through the tall, dull green grass of late summer, moving in our direction. I told our photography group to move back and prepare cameras. The bear was a big one. Next, I told the group: “For this image to work, we will need to get down low and switch from horizontal to vertical format.”
A minute later, my prediction was correct; it was walking straight at us. Using a long lens so we could keep a distance, our group captured some impressive images of a male American black bear. This specimen was well over 500 pounds and preparing for hibernation.

Gretchen Steele: Illinois, dog owners benefit from all aspects of field trials

When we consider the various user groups and the economic benefits they bring to communities near Illinois DNR properties, it seems one particular group isn’t well known by the public. While hunters, anglers, hikers, and boaters often take the spotlight, what about those who utilize DNR properties for dog training and competitive events?

Hunter walking trails get a facelift in northern Minnesota

As Scott Johnson drove to his desired ruffed grouse-hunting spot on Minnesota’s season opener in mid-September, he felt a pang of pride as he passed parked cars at area hunter walking trail trailheads.
“It’s great. It’s very rewarding when people are using these and hopefully, probably appreciating them,” said Johnson, who is the Ruffed Grouse Society’s forest conservation coordinator in Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.
The sense of accomplishment surfaced in that moment because the RGS and local entities in northern Minnesota had spent the past few years upgrading and restoring the hunter walking trails.
