I met Tom Coulthurst not long after moving to Wisconsin’s Minocqua/Woodruff area in June 1986 to work as a reporter at The Lakeland Times. It was summer. Probably 1986 or 1987.
I went to his taxidermy shop on assignment because Tom had hit a hole-in-one on a local golf course. The editor said we needed a story. On a hole-in-one? Someone got lucky. There’s no story there. But I went anyway without too much grumbling since I’d get to look at stuffed fish, too.

The horn’s blare was aimed at us, a grandpa and grandson putting through one of the extensive slow/no-wake sections of Spring Lake and adjacent Grand River in Michigan.
We’d been talking, as such oldster/youngster teams do, about anything and everything. Now we were talking about (and soon with) an officer at the bow of the Sheriff Department Marine Patrol Boat, its bright blue light flashing on the hardtop.

I have a friend and fellow photographer who posts incredible pictures of what I consider “exotic birds” on social media. A master photographer, he lives in Tampa Bay, Florida, and I can’t begin to tell you how envious I am of him due to the wide range of birds at his fingertips.
While I am capturing photos of blue jays, cardinals and robins in my backyard, my friend is posting pictures of flamingos, spoonbills and swallow-tail kites. It didn’t seem like a fair comparison, or so I thought.

I love to use wild game to celebrate a holiday meal. Whether it is a turkey for Thanksgiving or a goose on Christmas, I always believe that having something I harvested on the table makes the celebration that much more special.
Most people wouldn’t think about St. Patrick’s Day (Monday, March 17, 2025) as a big food holiday, but I enjoy Irish food almost as much as I enjoy Irish whiskey. And what would St Patrick’s Day be without corned beef?

If you’re a serious bird hunter who hunts regularly over flushers and/or pointers, you know that injuries happen to your canine companion more frequently than you ever thought possible.
In fact, it’s a good day of hunting when your dog exits the field unscathed and in good condition. But, realistically we know that vet bills are the norm. It’s part of owning a hunting dog.
Take, for example, my late black Lab. A fine upland and water dog, Buddy made game (flushing and retrieving) with gusto – and often paid the price for it.
