With even thicker cover in Minnesota this year, woodcock success depends on busting brush

Woodcock hunters who hit the woods in the early season are bound to battle tough conditions. With the weather we’ve had this year, it’s buggy and extremely thick out there. A good way to approach this season – at least before the leaves start to come down – is to plan specific routes and try to run tight patterns where the birds should be.

Russ Mason: Would a simpler licensing structure benefit Michigan hunters?

In 1934, the Michigan hunting regulations pamphlet was a single piece of paper folded in half, creating a front, back, and two inside pages.
Today, the document has expanded to 80 pages, and also is electronically available both for convenience and because regulatory changes could occur after printing. No doubt, some of this regulatory increase reflects new challenges and federal impositions (e.g., mandatory hunter education, CWD, sealing of furbearers, increasingly complex federal waterfowl requirements), but mostly, it reflects well-meaning attempts to increase opportunity and hunter recruitment, retention, and reactivation.

Fishing for crappies in unsettled weather requires finesse

The daytime thermometer readings had dropped some 15 degrees, not all in one day thankfully but over the course of two weeks that feature two thunderstorm-sparking fronts.
At the same time, the water temperature had only come down two or three degrees from those massive highs when the sizzling days were in the mid-90s. It was a time of transition for everything.

State Roundup: Wisconsin bear hunters off to a great start

As of Sept. 20, Wisconsin’s black bear harvest totals stood at 91% of this year’s harvest goal with 3,527 animals registered across the six bear zones. The 2024 harvest goal was set at 3,850 bears. That’s an awfully strong start to the season, according to Randy Johnson, the DNR’s large carnivore biologist out of Rhinelander.
“By this point in the season (Sept. 20), we expect to see about 75% of total harvest occurred.”

Looking for a fun, laid-back style of hunting? It’s hard to beat doves

Unlike big game hunting, for the most part hunting small game offers participants the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company in a less restrictive atmosphere and to talk, laugh, and just generally cut up and have a good time. Dove hunting is no different.
Dove season is always long awaited for me and my family and friends. We look forward to it each year and begin talking about it months in advance, heck all year really.
