UTV Buyers’ Guide: What do updated lineups in the quad market look like for 2025?

Following nine consecutive years of steady growth, the power sports industry scored the all-time record in 2020, when government-mandated isolation boosted demand for off-road vehicles hit 0.7 million sales for the first time ever, and machines were sometimes difficult to find.
In succeeding years sales have continued to be strong, dealers have built up inventories, and if you’re in the market for a new machine, you should find an excellent selection of new ATVs and UTVs this fall.

Midwest Walleye Challenge’s highest catch rate occurred in Illinois, but more participation wanted

Illinois’ first cast at a virtual fishing tournament resulted in anglers catching 434 qualifying fish.
Hooking fishermen was a little bit tougher. Held March 30 through June 30, the Illinois Walleye Challenge attracted 31 anglers who logged a combined 864 hours of fishing across 43 bodies of water. Half the 297 trips taken in Illinois during the tournament resulted in “zero fish caught.”
Sam Militello had the largest catch, a 28.5-inch walleye.

Dean Bortz: Better bear hunting success expected in Wisconsin over ’23 season

No doubt bear hunters are hoping for a poor acorn crop this fall. The super abundant 2023 acorn crop has shouldered much of the blame for a light bear harvest last season in Wisconsin, with the final harvest numbers coming in at 3,005 bears, well below the DNR’s harvest goal of 4,575 bears.
The 2024 bear season opens Wednesday, Sept. 4 and closes Tuesday, Oct. 8, with bait-sitters going first this year in the zones where baiters and hound hunters swap early and late openers.

Good catches can be had for Ohio trout if you know where to fish in the fall

Although spring is the popular time to go, a fair amount of trout fishing can be had in the fall. Rivers offer opportunity well into the winter. The few harboring trout are good ones, flowing through places where it is worthwhile just to be there.
Catching a trout is the goal, but the payout is more than that.

North Dakota studying ways to lower bullhead populations

As a kid growing up in the 1980s, fishing to me was about opportunity. Thankfully, North Dakota’s forefathers had set up most communities near waterways for the purpose of transportation of goods.
For me, it was less about necessity and more about my ability to ride a bike to a river where I was certain to catch a pike or a perch. But most often, it was a bullhead at the end of my line.
For most anglers then and now, the bullhead is the equivalent of a dandelion: Both are rather common and neither is appreciated. And like a lover of dandelion-free lawns, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department continues to work toward reducing the number of these pesky but resilient fish.

Wildlife councils spread positive message on hunting, fishing, but does it work?

Michigan and Colorado recognize that the future of hunting and fishing depend on the goodwill of Americans who don’t hunt or fish (and are unlikely to start).
Both have legislatively established wildlife councils that promote the economic and ecological benefits of hunting and fishing with funding provided by a surcharge on every license sold. Both councils are making a difference.
