Minnesota’s Sand Dunes Gobblers earns Outdoor Leaders Award in 2024

If you’ve ever mentored a young turkey hunter during the spring season, you know the thrill of watching the newbie next to you experience something truly magical. For many kids, it’s a time of firsts, and a sensory experience like few others.
The morning sunrise. A bird gobbling on the roost. The purr, yelp, and cluck of a slate call. The strutting and cutting of a boss tom. An amorous – or not so amorous – decoy encounter. The echoing boom of a shotgun blast from a ground blind. A turkey in hand … or the agony of a near-miss.

Montana reports wolf population ‘strong’ after 2023 hunting season

The wolf population in Montana remains healthy, according to the 2023 Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Wolf Report. Increased harvest during the 2023 wolf season has not yet resulted in an estimated decline to the statewide total. However, FW&P biologists expect to see a moderate decline in wolf numbers next year resulting from the increased harvest in early 2024.

Minnesota’s Walk-In Access program now for use beyond just hunting

The Minnesota DNR’s Walk-In Access program is slated to have a similar amount of acreage available to hunters for the upcoming hunting seasons. But there’s a twist this year.
What’s new is that the program will expand, allowing bird watchers and photographers to access the 30,000 acres of available land to visit and explore.
“We’re hoping by the end of next year, we’ll have all the walk-in sites open to public users not just those select (locations) that were enrolled this year,” said Amber Knutson, WIA program coordinator for the DNR.

Waterfowl numbers take a dive during 2024 breeding duck survey in Minnesota

If you’re looking for one factor that influenced the subpar results of Minnesota’s 2024 Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey, the spring weather played an outsized role.
“It’s was one of the strangest springs I can remember, said Bruce Davis, supervisor for the Minnesota DNR’s Wetland Wildlife Research Group in Bemidji, who flew the annual aerial survey. In short, mallard, Canada goose, and overall duck abundance – estimates all – were down from last year. Blue-winged teal were up.

Pro Tip of the Week: Having a bad day? Maybe your color’s off

On the days you feel like you’re having an off-day because the fish aren’t biting, despite trying all your favorite spots, a change in color could make all the difference. If there is still no good luck, even though you are marking and/or seeing fish, don’t throw in the towel just yet.
