As most charter boats have ended their season on Lake Ontario, you can still target staging salmon and brown trout with smaller boats. Obviously, you need a boat capable of trolling safely on the lake. You don’t need to go deep as the fish are close to shore, searching for the tributaries and outlets.
Angling for trout and salmon does not end with lake fishing. Tributary angling has become an exciting way to catch browns, steelhead, and late staging king salmon.

I have known Ron Molinari for decades. I would watch him fishing in Naples during the iconic Rotary Club Naples Creek Rainbow Trout Derby. He mated when I fished with Predator Charters; probably wondering if I would ever learn how to grab a rod quickly.
He is currently a Master Licensed Captain issued by the United States Coast Guard. With his wife Amy as First Mate, they troll Lake Ontario in a 37-foot Trojan Express that has a 14-foot-wide beam. The service is correctly known as Fish-Fin-Addict. Home port is Sodus Bay.

Angler input needed to help study walleyes in New York waters of Lake Ontario

The New York Department of Conservation is planning to study walleyes in the Lower Niagara River, Irondequoit Bay, and Sodus Bay.
These Lake Ontario waters are stocked, but it’s difficult to determine the contribution of wild versus stocked walleyes to the fishable population. Therefore, DEC is utilizing otolith microchemistry to analyze at least 100 walleyes from each water to determine stocked or wild origin.
“We are asking anglers who are catching walleyes to be a part of this important study,” Brad Hammers, fishery manager for DEC, said.

King salmon cooperate at New York’s Sodus Pro-Am on Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario cooperated during the 2024 Sodus Pro Am, held July 13-14 in Sodus Point, N.Y., in Wayne County.
In past years, the normal conditions out in the “Big O” would give the teams one good day, and then one blow-off day. The lake was flat both days. This year’s Pro-Am had 27 pro and 36 amateur teams trolling the waters, searching for the king salmon and prize money.

A tribute to outdoor writer, enthusiastic angler Spider Rybaak

Spider Rybaak, who sadly passed away on Jan. 11, was my favorite outdoor writer, a scribe that produces the facts garnished with his great personality.
Ray Hrynyk was Spider Rybaak, and he told me he was dubbed the nickname because of his lanky stature. He stood around 6-feet, 5-inches and did resemble a spider: a very active spider. Rybaak was an excitable man and when you furnish him with a rod and reel, watch out, there is never a dull moment.
