Scouting tip: Never underestimate the power of natural foods to pull in whitetails

Late in the day of July 23, I made a spur-of-the-moment decision and headed afield. That action paid off with information that I’m confident could help me this early archery deer season.
My wife and daughters were in town that evening. Not one to sit around, I grabbed my new spotting scope and jumped in the truck. One problem: The public areas near me lack soybeans or other food plots that we consider prime deer feeding areas in ag country. What I have to work with are properties that feature good bedding cover on public land adjacent to private agriculture.
I was headed to watch one of those fields from a perch on public land, but did not make it that far. After walking less than half a mile from the truck, I peeked over the top of a hill and saw a young buck below. He was feeding heavily, but not on any kind of planted crop.

Michigan man gets jail time for Upper Peninsula hunter harassment case

An Upper Peninsula man spent four days in jail this spring for firing a rifle at hunters and undercover conservation officers during the first day of the 2023 goose season.
John Kamps, the Department of Natural Resources conservation officer who led the investigation, told Michigan Outdoor News the department since 2020 had received numerous complaints about hunter harassment at Morgan Pond, in Marquette County’s Negaunee Township.
“It’s public land, specifically the access on it is Negaunee Township property, which is open to hunting,” Kamps said.

The Ohio DNR plans to spend more than $17 million over the next two years to make Lake Erie’s Bass Islands more of a destination for both in-state and out-of-state visitors.
Agency Director Mary Mertz provided a brief summary of planned upgrades and investments during the annual Governor’s Fish Ohio Day in June. More recently, she noted how the projects will provide a unique experience for those visiting the Bass Islands.

Scorching summer has many anglers staying home in Pennsylvania

This summer’s wicked-hot weather has put a crimp in angling and boating on some waters across Pennsylvania.
Bait sales were sluggish at B & B Lures tackle shop in York County, although the shop was doing a brisk business in rods, reels, and other tackle, said B & B owner Gordon Brady in late July. ”What that tells us is people are fishing, but they aren’t making a day of it; they’re not staying out for as long as they normally would.”
One fisherman who did spend six hours on the water had just one bass, a 3-pounder, to show for his effort – an indication that fish have been laying low, too.
