Wisconsin DNR abruptly ends co-op trout rearing program

Volunteers working a long-running trout and salmon rearing and stocking program in cooperation with the Wisconsin DNR were caught by surprise recently when local field staffers called to say the DNR suspended the program in mid-stream.
Though reasons eventually trickled down to the volunteers, the initial message was brief. Program done. No fish will be delivered.

Central Minnesota gains new public-land parcel in Stearns County

Outdoor enthusiasts in the central part of Minnesota will have a unique piece of public property to use in the not-too-distant future. What began as discussions two years ago is now on a fast track to reality.
As part of its partnership approach to permanent land protection across Minnesota, Pheasants Forever recently announced development plans for a 249-acre area of public use south of the city of Cold Spring in Stearns County.

James Lindner: Target these locations during peak ‘bug hatch’ season

It’s been an interesting season to say the least. Although we experienced the earliest ice-out I can remember in central Minnesota, the cool, wet spring put the brakes on many of the typical seasonal movements of fish.
With a delay in these late spring and early summer progressions, we’ve been finding most of our fish relatively shallow. Take walleyes, for example, which have been using shallow rock and weed flats. Compare that to a so-called “normal” season, when many walleyes already would have moved to deeper water.

Commentary: A grateful duck hunter’s take on pintail proposal

Recently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that under certain conditions those of us who hunt ducks may be allowed (in 2025) up to three pintails per day versus present regulations allowing one.
Past waterfowl management leaders often took an “err-on-the-side-of-the-resource” approach with respect to waterfowl season length and bag limits. Population reports over decades have shown pintails to be below longterm averages. This looks aggressive to me.

Logan Urban is not like most kids his age, and that’s a good thing.
He’s 17 years old and just graduated from high school with a career in landscaping and charter fishing ahead of him. In the meantime, he’s hunting and fishing at every turn, the young man told me during an interview a couple of weeks ago.
