Steve Carney: With innovation, the swimbait has become a go-to these days

It’s amazing how the simple swimbait has now become a staple in my fishing arsenal. Meanwhile, the bait’s innovations continue to this day. For me it’s now a go-to, first-line bait that is probably the most versatile lure I can throw, especially during early summer.

Minnesota turkey hunters shatter previous record harvest as spring season concludes

The spring wild turkey season ended May 31, and a record-breaking year is on the books. The total harvest reached 16,660 turkeys, according to a preliminary report from Nate Huck, Minnesota DNR resident game bird specialist.
While a few birds might still be reported, most of the harvest officially is wrapped up. The 16,660-harvest count surpasses the 2020 record of 13,996 by 2,664 turkeys.

New laws in Minnesota aim to ease burden on imports for deer hunters, taxidermists

The 2024 legislative session introduced several new laws and statutes related to hunting and fishing for the upcoming year and beyond. One notable change involves taxidermists and the handling of deer and other big-game harvested outside of Minnesota.

Lt. Col. Robert Gorecki, of the Minnesota DNR’s Enforcement Division, said the development of the new laws has been a years-long process involving taxidermists and wildlife organizations. The complexity stemmed from factors including chronic wasting disease, taxidermy business operations, wildlife conservation, and DNR enforcement.

Duck seasons are set in Minnesota where the early teal hunt will continue

The Minnesota DNR has set the state’s waterfowl-hunting seasons for 2024, including offering hunters a five-day early teal season, with its opener slated for Sunday, Sept. 1.
The backdrop of the early teal season follows three experimental seasons (2020-23) in which hunters had to meet compliance “performance” measures on so-called non-target bird species as outlined by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The potential effects on non-teal species have been a concern of waterfowl officials since the first experimental early teal seasons in the Central and Mississippi flyways in the mid-1960s.

CAFO issue, a driver of Western Lake Erie algal blooms, comes to a head at conference

Thirty years have passed since harmful algal blooms (HABs) began reforming in Western Lake Erie. In response, more than 11 years ago Ohio, Michigan, and Ontario signed an agreement promising to reduce Western Lake Erie dissolved reactive phosphorous (DRP) loading by 40%. In August 2014, the city of Toledo told its more than 400,000 water customers not to drink or even touch their treated water due to the presence of an algal toxin, microcystin.
Yet, former Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory Director Jeff Reutter said that progress to curb DRP, also known as total bioavailable phosphorus (TBP), has “not even been 1% yet.”
