Al Lindner: Top tips for early-season walleyes

The 2024 Minnesota game-fishing season has arrived. The fishing opener – a tradition rivaled only by that of the firearms deer season – was last weekend, but the thrill of catching prime-time, early-season walleyes remains.
Some of most popular early-season destinations include Mille Lacs, Vermilion, Upper Red, Winnibigoshish, Otter Tail, and Leech lakes. There’s no question that these areas will see a temporary population spike during the first stanza of the new season.

Michigan DNR introduces new Paw Paw River State Game Area

The Michigan DNR announced the establishment of the Paw Paw River State Game Area, a new, 350-acre parcel in Van Buren County’s Waverly Township. The DNR will manage this area for wildlife habitat, protecting vulnerable species and enhancing public access to hunting lands and waterways in southwest Michigan.
“We are thrilled for this land purchase, as it reinforces our dedication and the dedication of our partners to wildlife conservation and better, broader access to public recreation,” said Mark Mills, southwest regional manager for the DNR Wildlife Division.

Time to cash in on crappies in the Midwest; here’s what to know

As I pen this story, the crappie bite here in the Midwest is heating up, a bit later than usual, thanks to warmer temperatures not really hitting us too hard early on. With the warmer days finally on the horizon, however, the water temps will rapidly climb, meaning the slab-sided papermouth action is here.
Crappies don’t actually spawn until the water temperature is between 62 and 65 degrees (although black crappies may start a little earlier and white crappies a little later). But they begin actively seeking out suitable areas to spawn when the water is much cooler than that.

Viral hemorrhagic septicemia the culprit in Michigan’s Lake Macatawa fish kill

An ongoing fish die-off on Lake Macatawa, near Holland in Ottawa County, stems from the virus responsible for causing viral hemorrhagic septicemia, or VHS, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently confirmed.
Reports of large numbers of dead and dying fish near the outlet channel of Lake Macatawa began coming in around mid-April through the DNR’s Eyes in the Field online reporting app.

Michigan men arraigned in torture, illegal hunting case from Kalkaska

Nicholas Patnode, 19, and Zander Garrett, 20, were arraigned earlier this month in Kalkaska County District Court in Kalkaska for multiple wildlife violations that took place throughout Kalkaska County during October-November 2022.
Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers began the complex investigation in 2022 after receiving a tip through the DNR Report All Poaching hotline. Conservation officers discovered a group of individuals who had committed multiple wildlife crimes, including several counts of shooting deer from a motor vehicle, game-tagging violations and animal cruelty charges.

Michigan hunter shoots bear that had been tagged 180 miles away by Wisconsin DNR

Gerry Maciok from Republic, Mich., was surprised when he discovered the black bear he shot with bow and arrow in Marquette County on Oct. 11, 2023 was from Wisconsin. A small circular tag on the back of the bear’s ear contained wording that stated, “Call 1-608-935-1940 before consuming; WI DNR.”
When Maciok called the telephone number he found out that the male bear he shot had been tagged as a yearling (one year old) during January of 2021 while in a den with its mother in the northwest corner of Marathon County not far from Wausau.
“The bear traveled approximately 180 miles to where I harvested the bear in Marquette County,” Maciok wrote in an email.
