Outdoor Observations: Sharing spots shore fishing in Michigan, and that’s just fine

Evening was fading quickly, and I really didn’t have the time to take the boat down to a lake and launch it for an evening of fishing. Instead I grabbed my rod and tried a shore fishing spot near home.
To my complete surprise there was a truck already parked at “my spot.” I glanced toward the lake and saw four teens with their lines in the water. Oh well, I thought, I’ll go to another shore fishing spot in nearby Bald Mountain Recreation Area. But when I got there, again I’d been beaten to the punch.

Bob Barr elected NRA President, Doug Hamlin elected as NRA Executive Vice President & CEO

On Monday, the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) elected former U.S. Congressman Bob Barr as president of the NRA and Doug Hamlin as NRA Executive Vice President & CEO.
The meeting of the Board of Directors followed the 153rd NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits where over 72,000 NRA members filled the halls of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas to check out the latest firearms, gear, and accessories from close to 700 exhibitors.

Commentary: Many Midwest states studying perils of ruffed grouse

Driving through Michigan, a state known for one university’s love for an over-grown weasel and as a hot destination for sportsmen and women, I came upon a portion of a public wildlife area that appeared to be devastated. Literally devoid of most trees and shrubs, it looked like a tornado had ripped through and a giant vacuum had been used to clear most of the debris. I wasn’t surprised.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Reimburse Pennsylvania hunters if deer test positive for CWD

Given the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s extremely robust financial position, the fast spread of chronic wasting disease in our state and the threat it poses to influence deer hunters to drop out of the sport, I strongly urge the agency to devise a way to reimburse hunters whose harvested deer test positive for CWD.

Blue-winged and green-winged teal: Examining the colorful Illinois natives

When a blue-winged teal takes flight over an Illinois wetland, you immediately understand how it got its name. The powdery blue patch on its wings is prominent, especially when the sun is shining.
In flight, the slightly smaller green-winged teal also shows a colorful wing – one that’s green and black in the speculum. Those wing patches are great identification factors in both the male and female of these two native Illinois ducks.
Another good identification factor for the green-winged teal is the green patch that adorns the males’ rust-colored head. Females of both teal species are mottled brown to gray, but do show the speculum color.
