University of Minnesota Forestry Center in state-tribal land transfer negotiations

A bill in the Minnesota Legislature would transfer parcels of state-owned land within the boundaries of the Cloquet Forestry Center to the University of Minnesota. Once that’s completed, the university is planning to transfer all the state- and university-owned land to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
The bill and the university’s intent have generated debate among citizens who support transferring original Fond du Lac reservation land, while others are questioning what this transfer would mean to university students at the center and why the land is being transferred for free.

Illinois DNR announces detection of chronic wasting disease in Ford County

Deer hunters keeping score at home may instinctively place Ford County as No. 20 on the state’s chronological list of counties with at least one confirmed case of CWD.
It is actually No. 21. With no hoopla – or even significant public announcement – Bureau County filled the No. 20 spot in late 2023. The CWD map on DNR’s website still does not include the Bureau County deer, nor do any of the charts and lists pertaining to CWD. Documents on DNR’s website still put the number of positive counties at 19.

Minnesota’s Hungry Jack Lake satisfies anglers’ appetite for smallies, ’eyes

More than 30 years ago, the DNR tried to establish a lake trout population in Cook County’s Hungry Jack Lake. While there appeared to be enough deep, cool water and lake trout-type habitat to support a laker population, the effort was unsuccessful.
Lake trout were last stocked in Hungry Jack in 2004, and not a single fish has shown up in DNR surveys since. But Hungry Jack is managed effectively for walleyes and smallmouth bass, both of which provide excellent fish-catching opportunities.

Nature Smart: The now too-rare prairie chickens

Awaking at o’-dark:30 to capture images of wildlife is standard operating procedure in my field.
During the past 40 years, I’ve dragged myself out of bed early thousands of times. So, last week when the alarm went off at 4 a.m., it was no surprise. I grabbed a few snacks and a bottle of water and headed out to my truck. It was a short drive before I exited the main road and traveled a series of dusty gravel roads.

Backyard and Beyond: Gray squirrel defends its nest from hawk

The last thing a mother gray squirrel wants to see is a red-tailed hawk landing near her nest, intent on feasting on her babies. Nick D’Addio caught the action as a big hawk menaced a squirrel, then flew off with one of her offspring.
