USFWS says lake sturgeon not endangered, allowing state management to continue

Lake sturgeon don’t need Endangered Species Act protections, federal wildlife officials announced Monday, saying that stocking programs have helped the prehistoric fish return to areas where they had vanished.
The decision ends the Arizona-based Center of Biological Diversity’s petition filed in May 2018 asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list lake sturgeon as endangered or threatened. Such listings would make harvesting the fish illegal, but without them, popular sturgeon-harvest seasons in states such as Wisconsin and Michigan can continue.

Minnesota’s Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Be ready for early-season walleye fishing

Every angler should have Lake Mille Lacs on their fishing list, despite the catch-and-release regulations. This year, with the mild winter, we expect fishing opener to be different than previous ones. The water will be warmer, so to see the most success, I’d use a slip bobber and a leech while using forward-facing sonar.

Walleye season opens May 4 on Iowa’s Great Lakes

The 148th walleye fishing season officially opens May 4 at Iowa’s Spirit Lake, and East and West Okoboji lakes.
“Walleye sampling this spring shows a very robust and healthy population,” said Mike Hawkins, fisheries biologist for the Iowa DNR. “Iowa Great Lakes experienced a record setting early ice out date. Ice duration also set a record with the lakes iced up for only 50 to 58 days, 20 days shorter than any other year since 1916 when record keeping began. Water temperatures remain on a normal trajectory for a good opener.”

The previous management plan for the area was developed in 1997.
