Pennsylvania’s mentored youth trout day keeps traditions alive

Every mentored youth trout fishing day I can remember in Pennsylvania started out the same way … cold.
Years ago, when I took my now 21-year-old nephew out for the very first mentored youth fishing day — I believe it was 2013 — my sister dropped him off at my house wearing a hooded sweatshirt. I recall thinking the kid might freeze to death and outfitted him with extra warm clothes from my closet. We took a canoe out on Lion’s Lake and had a great time together, but by the time he’d caught his limit, we were both shivering.

Christine Thomas: A bluebird (nest box) day at the little cabin

On March 7, my friend, Pat Empson, who lives near an orchard north of Traverse City, Mich., posted a great Facebook photo of an eastern bluebird perched on what looks like a piece of furniture in her yard. A week later, her local television station featured it in two of its newscasts.
“Wow!” I exclaimed, as I showed the photo to my husband, Stan. “This seems early. I guess we had better get our nest boxes cleaned out.”

New York public lands expected to draw many for April 8 solar eclipse

On Monday, April 8 just after 3 p.m., a total solar eclipse will be passing through Western New York, on to Central N.Y. and then through the northern part of the Adirondacks, exiting the state through Plattsburgh, in Clinton County. While this total solar eclipse travels over a third of New York State, the entirety of the state will be able to see at least 88% of a partial eclipse.

DNR and Iowa State University partnering with national nonprofit in effort to conserve Iowa’s pollinators

A new statewide project is looking for Iowa volunteers to help researchers track and monitor the state’s at-risk bumble bees.
The Iowa Bumble Bee Atlas is a collaboration between the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, Iowa State University, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources that aims to understand native bumble bee distributions and their habitat needs throughout the state. Iowa is home to at least 14 species of bumble bees that play an essential role in sustaining the health of the environment, from pollinating native wildflowers to flowering crops in farm fields and backyard gardens.
