Outdoor Insights: Keep Minnesota’s public land public

On Friday, April 5, some state conservation groups are hosting a 3 p.m. public lands rally at the Minnesota State Capitol. The weatherman calls for a balmy 52 degrees and sun, but a chill wind might just penetrate the building’s corridors, because these days, public lands face threats from across the political spectrum.
In 2024 we have state and federal Democrats feverishly working to assuage their white guilt and right history’s wrongs by transferring public properties – currently open to all races, creeds, and colors – to tribal entities.

Carp deterrent funding in Minnesota likely available; so what’s up next?

For the past two years, there’s been a spotlight on Asian carp and trying to find ways to fund a carp deterrent at Lock and Dam 5 of the Mississippi River. During the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council meeting on March 26, the council found an answer when it approved $12 million for the Minnesota DNR to construct a carp deterrent.
Since the issue has focused on funding for years, next steps haven’t been scrutinized as closely. With funding approved, the next question is how does a deterrent get built.

Red Lake-area residents in Minnesota work to fend off tribal land-transfer bills

While legislation that would at no cost transfer state land around Upper Red Lake to Red Lake Nation lies in wait at the State Capitol, counties, townships, organizations, and individuals in the area are mobilizing in an attempt to stave off such action.
As of Outdoor News press time, hearings hadn’t been scheduled for either the House or Senate bills, sponsored respectively by Rep. Sydney Jordan, DFL-Minneapolis, and Sen. Mary Kunesh, DFL-New Brighton. Both bills were introduced last month. In the meantime, plans to thwart the legislation have been nonstop, according to Robyn Dwight, president of the Upper Red Lake Area Association.

Ducks Unlimited offers its duck-hunting season in review

The 2023-24 duck-hunting season proved to be one of the most challenging in memory for many hunters across the nation.
Despite improved breeding conditions in 2022, results from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2023 breeding population survey revealed another year of population declines in the traditional survey area, as total ducks were down 7% and mallards down 18% to their lowest level in nearly 30 years.

Minnesota’s Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: April might bring normalcy to fishing

Nature seems to always even itself out.
February was warm, followed by a cold March. Now, early April is on track with air temperatures reaching the 40s and 50s. In southern and central Minnesota, walleyes will be in their natural state of pre-spawn soon and will transition to spawning once water temperature stabilizes at 42 degrees or more.
