New York Mixed Bag: Orange County District Attorney’s youth fishing derby now underway

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler’s office has launched the fourth annual Youth Fishing Derby, which runs from April 1 to Sept. 2. The theme of “get hooked on fishing, not drugs” continues and the derby is open to youth ages 4-18 who are children or grandchildren of Orange County residents.

New York DEC hiring summer camps staff

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced that several positions are available in DEC’s Summer Camps program.
DEC hires approximately 60 seasonal employees each summer to provide week-long adventures in conservation education for children ages 11-17. Working at a DEC camp is a fun opportunity to gain practical outdoor, naturalist, teaching, leadership, and many other transferrable skills while living in a beautiful setting.

Fishing season kicks off in New York with 1.9 million trout scheduled to be stocked

As April 1 marks the start of New York’s trout fishing season, the New York State DEC reminds anglers that many waters across the state will be bolstered by agency’s extensive stocking program.
Stocking, which began in March and runs through early June, will include more than 1.9 million trout being stocked in waters statewide, enhancing the diversity of excellent fishing opportunities available to anglers in New York State.

Northern pike control efforts underway on Tiger Cat Chain in Wisconsin’s Sawyer County

The DNR Hayward area fisheries team ran a quick two-day fyke netting survey on the Tiger Cat Chain last May to primarily target muskies, but useful data also was gathered on northern pike, black crappies, and yellow perch, according to Evan Siriani, team member and report author.
