A question-and-answer look at the ongoing Michigan gray wolf debate

Deer hunters, land owners and business owners in the Upper Peninsula seem in agreement that the wolf population is out of control, taking a toll on their cherished deer herd. Fall tourism needed to carry small-town businesses from one season to the next has also been affected.
What’s behind the wolf controversy that seems to touch everyone’s lips in the UP? A series of questions and answers may enlighten.

Minnesota officials seeking answers to Lake Traverse fish kill

Lake Traverse, straddling the border of South Dakota and Minnesota, experienced a significant fish kill discovered March 14, that resulted in the death of thousands of fish. Tests are ongoing to pinpoint the exact cause of the die-off, but, according to Chris Domeier, Minnesota DNR Ortonville area fisheries supervisor, the lake exhibited high oxygen levels throughout the winter.

Commentary: An updated muskie-management plan in Minnesota is overdue

Minnesota was once the greatest muskie-fishing destination on the planet. That fact created a generation of new muskie anglers, built Minnesota businesses, and attracted nonresident anglers from around the world to the state.
But Minnesota muskie anglers now believe the number of muskies and the quality of the muskie-fishing experience has been declining for more than a decade. The DNR largely has ignored Minnesota’s muskie fishery in recent years. In fact, the DNR has failed to produce a long-range muskie-management plan that was due to you, state license holders, in 2020.

Minnesota DNR seeks input on state’s muskie plan update

The Minnesota DNR is asking people to share their thoughts on how the DNR manages muskellunge as part of an update to the state’s muskie long-range plan.
“We’re gathering input as we update our muskie plan for the future,” said Leslie George, northeast region fisheries manager. “As a first step in updating the plan, we’re asking about the experiences and interests of anglers and others related to muskie management.”

Snowstorm halts goose migration in Upper Midwest, but much-needed moisture may help small wetlands

A spring snow goose migration thought to be two weeks ahead of schedule has come to a screeching halt, thanks to Mother Nature’s post-winter handiwork.
A multi-day snowstorm and unseasonably low temperatures that settled across the Upper Midwest earlier this week have reset the migration, state and federal waterfowl officials say, with thousands of snows and blues moving back south to find open water and snowless farm fields as they attempt to fuel up during their journey to their arctic breeding grounds in Canada.

Angling advocacy organizations call for Minnesota DNR to re-examine Lake Mille Lacs data and methodology

A pair of angling advocacy organizations, led by the MN-FISH Sportfishing Coalition, sent a letter to Minnesota DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen on Tuesday citing their concerns about the 2024 walleye regulation for Lake Mille Lacs.
The DNR recently announced that walleye fishing on the lake will be catch-and-release when the inland waters season begins on May 11.
