Omnibus bills introduced in Minnesota, target budgets unveiled

The Minnesota Legislature reached its second deadline Friday, March 22, which means omnibus bills start to roll out for the various committees. The Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee finalized the first draft of its omnibus bills March 21, while the House Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy Committee introduced its bill last Friday.
The omnibus bills usually include many individual bills heard throughout the early part of session, and the two committees typically have identical bills to pass the House and Senate. The main portions are identical, but some smaller details aren’t alike.

Brothers tried to fight off mountain lion during fatal attack in Northern California, family says

Two brothers who were attacked, one fatally, by a mountain lion in Northern California over the weekend tried to scare the cougar away once they realized it was stalking them, and then fought with the animal after it pounced, according to a family statement Monday.
Taylen Robert Claude Brooks, 21, was killed Saturday in a remote area northeast of Sacramento in the first fatal encounter with a mountain lion in the state in two decades. His 18-year-old brother, Wyatt Jay Charles Brooks, survived and is expected to recover after multiple surgeries.

Infertile waters make Sturgeon Lake in Minnesota’s St. Louis County a modest fishing option

On paper, Sturgeon Lake looks like it has all the makings of a fine walleye fishery. It’s a large body of water with plenty of depth, there’s a lot of structure, and it’s part of a chain and thus has an inlet and an outlet.
But this St. Louis County system has some limiting factors.

Minnesota Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Top areas for springtime fishing

It’s common knowledge that water temperature plays a critical role in spring fishing.

Large concentrations of fish will position themselves in the warmest water available. This often will be the farthest point upstream in a river system, or the northernmost bay or shoreline in a lake. These areas can be extremely popular, so when crowds take over, here are my top three secondary options for spring fishing.

Steve Carney: For Missouri River’s spring walleyes, think small jigs

My first fishing trip to the Missouri River in central South Dakota was a successful one, with two days of magnificent weather. Highs both days were in the 70s, and there was no wind. I couldn’t ask for a better trip.
I spent the first three hours fishing deep-water spots that I’d fished last season, but initially struck out. The guests with whom I was fishing were giving me the “look,” and I didn’t blame them. It all changed later in the afternoon.
