Diamond Lake in Wisconsin’s Bayfield County a diverse fishery

Diamond Lake supports a diverse fish community and popular sport fishery. Natural reproduction supports all species, except for walleyes. That population is supported by primarily by stocking. Regulations aimed at protecting adult walleye have been successful.
Northern pike harvest management has shown mixed results. The recent changes in regulations for bass came about too recently to show any major results.

State Roundup: Should Wisconsin have a hunting season for sandhill cranes?

I wish I could ask Herb Behnke how he would handle the set-to over whether Wisconsin should have a sandhill crane hunting season.
Many readers may remember Behnke as a longtime Natural Resources Board member who offered loads of common sense on resource issues while also being able to build bridges – for the most part – between opposing sides of an issue.

Lee Kernen: Will advances in high-tech fishing ever end?

One of the few good things about old age is that it gives a true perspective on how changes have affected our lives – and nowhere are the changes more impactful than innovations in fishing gear and techniques.
Growing up as a kid on Wisconsin’s Crystal Lake in Sheboygan County, I fished almost every summer day. I had a cane pole rigged with black linen line and a heavy store-bought pre-tied hook and leader made out of what we called catgut. It was thick and stiff. I don’t know how we caught anything.

A quick chat with turkey fanatic Jeff Budz

To call Jeff Budz a turkey hunting fanatic is a serious understatement. He has more than 35 years of experience hunting, guiding, writing, and filming hunts all over the world.
To Budz, who lives in Okeechobee, Fla., hunting isn’t just a hobby, it’s a way of life. He has shot more than 500 turkeys, completed 110 grand slams of all four wild turkey subspecies (Eastern, Merriam’s, Rio Grande, and Osceola), and recorded a self-guided super slam of longbeards (one in each of the 49 states with turkeys).

Floating jerkbaits can take big trout in high, cloudy streams

When it comes to catching trout, there is no shortage of effective methods to get the job done. Flies, live bait, spoons, spinners or salmon eggs – there’s no shortage of opinions on what the most effective way to fish for brookies, browns and rainbows.
I would argue that for the most part, it can all come down to the water conditions. I would also argue that under most conditions, spinners take that award for me if your goal is to catch as many trout as possible. However, I have found that under certain circumstances, spinners can be out-fished with floating “jerkbaits” when water runs higher, and cloudier than preferred.
