Alligator that survived Pennsylvania winter one of 70 animals killed during fire at rescue facility

An alligator believed to have survived a Pennsylvania winter in the wild has perished in a fire at a suburban sanctuary here.
Neo was one of more than 70 gators, turtles, salamanders, tarantulas and other animals that died in the Feb. 26 blaze at the non-profit Nate’s Reptile Rescue in South Park, which Allegheny County police say housed about 100 exotics. No cause had been announced by the county fire marshal as of March 3.

Fracking bids go to two firms to drill on Ohio state lands

There may soon be oil and gas fracking in one state park and two state wildlife areas following action by a special Ohio commission in late February.
The state Oil and Gas Land Management Commission voted to grant mineral leases to Encino Energy Partners for three parcels of land in Valley Run Wildlife Area and one parcel in Zepernick Wildlife Area. Leases also went to Infinity Natural Resources Ohio for two parcels in Salt Fork State Park. Both companies submitted “highest and best” bids for the leases, as state law requires.

Senate grills Pennsylvania Game Commission on hiring lobbying firm

Several state senators are questioning the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s decision to hire a lobbying firm run by former state Sen. Joe Scarnati.
According to a Feb. 8 report by Spotlight PA, last fall the Game Commission contracted with the lobbying firm Allegheny Strategy Partners at a cost of $10,000 per month. Scarnati, who was a high-ranking Republican in the Senate for years until his retirement in 2020, is one of three partners of the firm.

Shoreline stabilization project underway at Iowa’s Silver Lake to improve water quality

Work is underway to stabilize the shoreline on the northwest section of Silver Lake, in Iowa’s Dickinson County.
The contractor will close segments of the Trappers Bay State Park roadway as work progresses. Road closures and signage will be adjusted to allow as much public access as possible. Access must be restricted when trees are being removed to ensure the safety of park users. The public is advised to not drive or walk past the road closure signs.

Iowa’s spring community trout stocking starts March 21

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources fisheries staff will release between 1,000 to 2,000 rainbow trout in nine lakes across Iowa in March and April as part of its cool weather trout program.
The spring community trout stockings are a great place to take kids to catch their first fish. A small hook with a nightcrawler or corn under a small bobber to casting small simple spinners such as a Panther Martin or Mepps is all you need to get in on the fun.
