Tow captains honored for lifesaving efforts on Lake Erie

When recreational boats break down on the water, need a battery jump, run out of fuel or run aground, the nation’s largest fleet of on-water towing and assistance, TowBoatUS, responds 24/7 to get them home.
Sometimes, however, matters aren’t so routine and the captains that helm TowBoatUS response vessels choose to step in as good Samaritans to help save lives, as well.

Ohio’s hunting season dates proposed for the 2024-25 season

The 2024-25 Ohio hunting and trapping season dates for white-tailed deer, waterfowl, and other migratory game birds, furbearers, small game, and additional species were proposed to the Ohio Wildlife Council on Wednesday, Feb. 7, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR). The Division of Wildlife also proposed removing the trumpeter swan from the state’s threatened species list.

Commercial fishers, Minnesota DNR capture 83 invasive carp in Pool 5A of the Mississippi River

The Minnesota DNR on Monday reported that a commercial fishing crew captured 83 adult carp –  82 silver and one bighead – on Feb. 13 and 14 in Pool 5A of the Mississippi River.
“As with previous captures, it is unlikely that these adult fish were the result of reproduction in Minnesota waters,” said Kelly Pennington, DNR invasive species unit supervisor, in an agency press release. “The DNR and partner agencies will continue to use a range of aggressive prevention and management techniques, consistent with the recently updated Invasive Carp Action Plan.”

Highly-anticipated walleye river runs are fast approaching in Ohio

Even as cold evening temperatures maintain skim ice across the surface water, inside quiet marinas and boat ramps remain slick along Lake Erie’s shoreline, and rivers that receive slugs of moving water from warmer upstream rainfall run freely earlier.
In March, the Maumee and Sandusky rivers provide wading and shoreline anglers some of the earliest opportunities each spring for anglers to cast for walleyes.

Ohio Letters to the Editor: We need more letters to the editor to print in the news

This is the first edition in the near 20-year history of Ohio Outdoor News that we don’t have at least one letter to the editor for the print edition of the newspaper.
For the record, it happened for the first time in this edition, Vol. 19, Issue 5 with a publish date of March 1.

Ohio Insider: Conducting a deer season autopsy

We wrapped up the 2023-24 deer season in early February and, as is typical, I phoned Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife Deer Management Administrator Mike Tonkovich for a summation of the season.
The season was an overwhelming success in terms of sheer numbers – 213,928 deer harvested and the second most bucks killed in any one season to date. That’s an estimated 12 million pounds of venison, according to the Division of Wildlife.
