New Maryland record rainbow trout caught in Antietam Creek

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently recognized Jean-Philippe Lartigue, of Bethesda, as a new state record holder for rainbow trout in the Nontidal Division.
Lartigue caught a 17.44-pound rainbow trout Feb. 10 in the section of Antietam Creek running through Devil’s Backbone County Park in Washington County.

Dam project sends sediment load into Pennsylvania trout stream, canceling three scheduled stockings

A deluge of sediment into a stocked trout stream in Lackawanna County has forced the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission to cancel scheduled stockings while county commissioners are calling for an investigation into the incident.
In early February, Pennsylvania American Water began work to rehabilitate a dam on Dunmore Reservoir No. 7. The 150-year old reservoir is part of a $17 million dam rehabilitation project required by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Canonsburg, Pa., man sentenced in bald eagle shooting case

A western Pennsylvania man was sentenced in federal court in January for the fatal shooting of a mature bald eagle in a Washington County residential community last May.
Rodney Thomas, 51, of Canonsburg, pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, and was given two years’ probation and 50 hours of community service at a bird or wildlife-related facility for the killing, which occurred in Cherry Valley Lakeview Estates, Mount Pleasant Township.

Pennsylvania Mixed Bag: Daniele Gualtieri joins staff at Allegheny National Forest

The U.S. Forest Service recently announced that Daniele Gualtieri is serving as the new Marienville District Ranger in the Allegheny National Forest. She follows in the footsteps of former District Ranger Robert Fallon, who retired from the U.S. Forest Service in December of 2023.
